ROCK HALL — The Kent County Board of Education has approved the calendar for the 2024-25 school year.
As required by the State of Maryland, the approved calendar includes 180 instruction days for students. Two inclement weather days are built into the calendar.
The 2024-25 school year will begin with a staggered start.
Students in first through sixth grades and ninth-graders will begin school Tuesday, Sept. 3, the day after Labor Day. The first day for students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades is Wednesday, Sept. 4. Prekindergartners and kindergartners start school Thursday, Sept. 5.
Longer breaks during the year are Thanksgiving, Nov. 27 through Dec. 1; winter break, Dec. 21 through Jan. 1; and spring break April 17 to April 21.
Additional observed holidays are Martin Luther King Day Monday, Jan. 20; Presidents Day Monday, Feb. 17; and Memorial Day, Monday, May 26.
There are half days and days off in the calendar for staff professional development.
The last day of school is Thursday, June 12. That will be a half day for students.

The calendar was developed with input from a committee led by Dan Hushion, supervisor of human resources, and comprising Kent County Public Schools staff and parents.
Staff and community input was sought through two online surveys throughout the development process.
Two drafts calendars were presented to the Board of Education at its meeting Feb. 12, both with post-Labor Day starts.
Survey results showed that of the 327 survey respondents, 75% preferred the calendar that ultimately received the Board of Education's unanimous approval during a meeting Feb. 12.
The other draft, which received 25% of the votes, had longer breaks throughout the school year with last day of school being Friday, June 20.
